Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley just left the crowded 2026 race for Wisconsin governor. Crowley grew up in a working class Milwaukee family that faced eviction, an experience that fueled his rise to become a state representative and the first Black county executive. Despite this strong background and his recent push to fix local pension issues, he struggled to gain voter traction.
Recent polls show former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes and Madison State Representative Francesca Hong dominating the top spots by a wide margin. Both Barnes and Hong have built massive grassroots networks and statewide name recognition. Meanwhile, Crowley faced mounting campaign money issues and questions about a projected 168 million dollar county budget deficit. He now urges his party to unite against Republican Tom Tiffany.
