Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley just left the crowded 2026 race for Wisconsin governor. Crowley grew up in a working class Milwaukee family that faced eviction, an experience that fueled his rise to become a state representative and the first Black county executive. Despite this strong background and his recent push to fix local pension issues, he struggled to gain voter traction.

​Recent polls show former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes and Madison State Representative Francesca Hong dominating the top spots by a wide margin. Both Barnes and Hong have built massive grassroots networks and statewide name recognition. Meanwhile, Crowley faced mounting campaign money issues and questions about a projected 168 million dollar county budget deficit. He now urges his party to unite against Republican Tom Tiffany.
